How sad that they feel they have to take the position. When I hear stories like this I'm just so glad I an no longer part of that sick religion. They do not understand the meaning of Christian love.

A really annoying text
by strawberry cake inthis is a really irritating text that i received from an old jw acquaintance.. .
i would like to tell you that the latest book we received 'keep yourselves in god's love', says that jw have to strictly avoid someone disfellowshipped.
the same applies to someone who left organization.

Several posters mentioned that colleges are not the only place where you will find immorality, drugs and alcohol and I agree completely. I think the real issue with drugs, sex, etc. is age. Most college students are in their late teens and early 20's and are experimenting with different things, learning to be adults and making their own choices. Wherever you find large groups of young people you will find the same thing. When I was in my teens and 20's and worked in restaurants there was plenty of it. Parents aren't protecting their kids from it by keeping them from college. Their kids are going to be exposed to it anyway. The WT uses this as an excuse to scare parents and their children from going to college for there own manipulative purposes.

In the Watchtower view of the world, everything that happens is somehow about them. If they were an individual, a psychological diagnosis of some sort would have to be in order.

Steve Hassan talks in his books about phobias cults put in their members' minds about various different issues. Maybe there's one lurking there somewhere for you. My feeling is that we are doing our duty as citizens when we vote. Some countries (Australia, I believe) even make it compulsory. Perhaps you would agree that democracy, despite it's flaws, is the best form of government out there right now. It certainly beats dictatorships. Democracies can only work with an active citizenry that votes. As far as your responsibility for making the best choice, the fact that you take your vote seriously is a good indicator of how you'll vote. It means that you will stay informed and carefully weigh your choice based on factual information. No country can ask more of its voters than that. If you don't vote, are you any more or less responsible for who was elected? For instance, if you have never voted before, you didn't vote for either Al Gore or John Kerry in the last two presidential elections. Does that mean you are any more or less responsible for the way George W. Bush ran the country? Even if you had voted for Bush, are you somehow responsible for decisions he made that no one could have predicted? In my opinion, not voting is a vote, because a certain responsibility rests with the citizens whether they exercise it or not. By the way, I've been voting for years and have yet to be called for jury duty.

Possible reason for book study change?
by Damocles inin my experience, you can't go too far wrong in ascribing gb actions as responses to three stimuli: precedent, money, law.
if two are involved, like the tax implications of selling literature, the ws move swiftly and decisively irrespective of precedent.
the book study change makes little sense.

This is an interesting question, especially in light of the fact that the new arrangement will be considerably shortened in time, and now be called a 'Bible' study, instead of the 'book' study. I don't think they have a lot of new material to put out there. It seems like it's been the same old recycled crap for some time now. The society says their reason is to save the brothers and sisters gas money, but few of us on this board believe that.

What is Destructive Mind Control ? Points from "Releasing the Bonds "
by flipper inin getting out of the jehovah's witnesses cult - are we all aware of what was totally involved in the mind control they used ?
in steve hassan's " releasing the bonds " he gets into some variables of mind control in detail.
i thought you would enjoy a few of these main points.

I think one of the best things we can do is encourage public discourse on the subject. The more people can become familiar with the issue, the techniques these groups use, etc., the more difficult it will be for groups like the WT to find successful converts, or to keep the ones they have. I e-mailed my local newspaper asking them to do a feature article on the subject, but so far they haven't done anything.

WE FINALLY HAVE THE REASON FOR THE BOOK STUDY CHANGE!!!!
by whereami ingeat ready to gag.
you just can't make this stuff up.. .
subject: fw: book study change in 2009. .

They should get paid for this stuff! It's quite a work of art. Not everyone has the kind of talent it takes to spin all the changes the WT makes. "We have to meet in homes so we'll be ready for when persecution comes." "We have to stop meeting in homes to be ready when persecution comes." "We have to have as many meetings as possible to get ready for Armageddon." "We have to have one less meeting a week to get ready for Armageddon." It could all be very confusing in the wrong hands.

Is the God of the wbts a loving God?
by bobld into the woman he said....i shall greatly increase the pain of your pregnancy.. to the man he said....cursed is the ground---in pain you will eat its produce all the days of your life and thorns and thistles it will grow for you.in the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground ( death).. now lets look at the above in todays world.would the state (government) after convicting a man of murder, torture him by hard work all his life only to kill him at the end of his life.would a loving parent torture his son all his life for one mistake.. why does god of the wbts blame man for ruining the earth when he made those evil thorns and thistles.today man had to get destroy those evil weeds by chemicals.see no thorns no chemicals.. the list goes on...look at all of god's wars and destruction.. maybe it is me but the more i read the bible the more i get *^%&^%#* .......................... bob.

A few years ago when I took Religion 101 at the public University in my town, the professor discussed differing views of God as they developed in different religions. He noted that the geography of the Middle East causes unpredictable, and often devastating, natural disasters such as droughts, famines, flash floods, etc. The ancient peoples living in that area believed in a God that rewarded them when they were 'good', and punished them severely when they were 'bad'. From those early ideas of God, the religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam eventually developed. In another region of the world, what is now India, other religions developed. There, the rivers were predictable and the area was reliably fertile. The annual flooding was expected, and contributed to successful farming. The ideas about God or Gods coming from that area tended to be much less violent and more benevolent. The Hindu religion, and eventually Buddhism, evolved from that area. While the Bible may be inspired by God, I always remember that it was written by man.

I am loosing interest in most things JW or XJW!
by AK - Jeff ini think that simon's announcement that this venue was closing was the catalyst.
i looked around the other forums and realized i just don't need them anymore.
i have logged in here probably 10% of my former time since the announcement, first to do the 'admin' stuff that was happening immediately following - but now usually only once a day, maybe 10 minutes, and can't even find much of interest while i do that.

Mrs. Fiorini
Congratulations to all who have or are moving into the post XJW world. Maybe someday I'll be there too. I only found this board this year, so am still fairly new to it even though I left the JW's back in 1989. Then it was just other JW's I knew who were leaving, and books like those written by Steve Hassen and Ray Franz. I thought I had pretty much put the JW's behind me too, but when my siblings and their families began shunning me a few years ago, I found I developed a whole new level of resentment and disgust for the WTS. Some day I will work it out of my system, but until then I'm glad for this site and will probably switch to another once it's closed down. Thanks to all who have listened to my postings and shared your experiences through postings of your own. It has definitely helped me heal.

Would you support professional jurys?
by 2112 inwe have seen many times over the years where jurys make their judgements based on emotions and not on the rule of law or the facts.
-the menendez brothers after killing their parents were found not guilty by the jury.
being asked why they decided the case that way the reason given was "those boys are so handsome and now they don't even have a mother.
-
Mrs. Fiorini
My understanding is that a defendant can either choose a jury of his/her peers, or have a judge decide the verdict. A judge would certainly offer a more "professional" decision. Most choose juries though. An old saying goes, "If you're guilty choose a jury, if you're innocent choose a judge."
